{"id":452,"date":"2011-03-20T17:50:35","date_gmt":"2011-03-21T00:50:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nerdhive.org\/glob\/?p=452"},"modified":"2012-05-24T22:57:40","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T05:57:40","slug":"resurrecting-an-extinct-dessert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=452","title":{"rendered":"Resurrecting an extinct dessert"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Today is my birthday, and normally on my birthday I have scratch cake as a treat. \u00a0This year I decided to do something different, and attempt to reproduce my all-time favorite dessert, something I&#8217;ve never found a replacement for.<\/p>\n<p>In my early teens we lived in Manitoba, and sometimes we would go down to\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brandon,_Manitoba\">Brandon<\/a> for overnight shopping trips. \u00a0On a few occasions we ate at a restaurant called Aunt Sara&#8217;s, which had the best dessert I&#8217;ve ever had &#8211; a layer of vanilla ice cream between two warm cake layers, all covered with very thick hot fudge sauce. \u00a0I had it two or three times, then we moved away.<\/p>\n<p>When I returned a few years later, the restaurant was under new management and no longer had the same desserts. \u00a0Since then I&#8217;ve been trying similar desserts at other restaurants looking for a replacement. \u00a0Injury to insult, Google tells me the restaurant has now been\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?f=q&amp;source=s_q&amp;hl=en&amp;geocode=&amp;q=brandon,+manitoba&amp;aq=&amp;sll=37.0625,-95.677068&amp;sspn=66.915969,135.263672&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;hq=&amp;hnear=Brandon,+Division+No.+7,+Manitoba,+Canada&amp;ll=49.85395,-99.961845&amp;spn=0.001702,0.004128&amp;t=h&amp;z=19&amp;layer=c&amp;cbll=49.854184,-99.961846&amp;panoid=pSntg_wkzw_XHaU2z_kbhQ&amp;cbp=12,107.83,,0,9.04\">demolished<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ABC&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.abccountry.ca\/menu\">Hot Fudge Mt. Baker<\/a> is similar in form but not in execution &#8211; the ice cream is sub-par, the fudge sauce is runny and insufficient, the cake is too fluffy and there&#8217;s way too much whipped cream on it. \u00a0Moxies&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/jerrychiu\/49468132\/\">White Chocolate Brownie<\/a> is the best cake-and-ice-cream dessert I&#8217;ve found since (on the rare occasions they put enough sauce on it and remember to heat up the brownie) but it&#8217;s not the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, I decided to try and recreate the original Aunt Sara&#8217;s dessert myself. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been planning this for a few months and have tried several different cake recipes and fudge sauces. \u00a0In the end I settled on these. \u00a0Normally I&#8217;d use Haagen-Dazs ice cream, but I thought I&#8217;d try this organic ice cream I recently spotted. \u00a0It&#8217;s pretty good.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-449 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/d20110320_0002-0005_collage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>(And before you call me out for using gluten-free and organic stuff and not using a scratch cake recipe, I chose these for flavor and texture.)<\/p>\n<p>Cake baked (with an extra egg to bulk it up a bit), chilled to make it cut more cleanly, then reheated in the microwave along with the fudge sauce. Cut a slice of the ice cream with a hot knife (not easy to get it out of the tub in slice form), and voila:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-450 alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/d20110320_0006.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Although mine is a little sloppy, this actually looks pretty similar to the original (minus whipped cream, which is usually an annoyance anyway). \u00a0Flavor-wise, unfortunately, it doesn&#8217;t stack up to my memories of the original. \u00a0It&#8217;s close. \u00a0Closer than ABC&#8217;s version and closer than anything else I&#8217;ve tried since, but still not the same.
