{"id":675,"date":"2011-08-12T22:44:27","date_gmt":"2011-08-13T05:44:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nerdhive.org\/glob\/?p=675"},"modified":"2012-05-24T23:02:48","modified_gmt":"2012-05-25T06:02:48","slug":"day-2-to-calgary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=675","title":{"rendered":"Day 2: to Calgary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Road trip log for 2011\/08\/10.<\/p>\n<p>Stayed at the Three Valley Lake Chateau last night, for the first time.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not bad.\u00a0 I got a fourth-floor room with a view of the lake.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a panorama of the view from my balcony:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/d20110810_0001-0003_pano.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/d20110810_0001-0003_pano_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110810_0001-0003_pano\" width=\"640\" height=\"174\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The room was small but adequate.\u00a0 It was pretty hot; I could get a nice breeze going through by leaving both doors open, but obviously that couldn&#8217;t go on all night &#8211; I also had to close the balcony door because there was too much noise from the highway otherwise.\u00a0 Fortunately the room included a floor fan so I left that running all night.<\/p>\n<p>Could have slept better but I felt OK during the day.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a &#8220;Ghost Town&#8221; tourist trap attached to the resort that I had always wondered about in passing.\u00a0 Decided to have a look this morning since it was half price for guests.\u00a0 It&#8217;s actually worthwhile &#8211; I only spent an hour photographing stuff quickly, but I could spend a whole afternoon there.\u00a0 It&#8217;s basically an enormous antique collection, including stuff up to train cars, amassed by the founders of the resort.\u00a0 It covers 4 acres and includes 14 buildings.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped at Revelstoke for breakfast, but my favourite breakfast place, <a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\/maps?q=revelstoke,+b.c.&amp;hl=en&amp;ll=50.997735,-118.196809&amp;spn=0.000468,0.00088&amp;t=h&amp;z=20\">Main Street Cafe<\/a>, was closed today.\u00a0 Had to settle for a crappy sandwich from Timmy&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped for a walk at the Giant Cedars boardwalk, and was shocked to discover that my memories of it are in error &#8211; the Cathedral Grove on Vancouver Island is actually much more impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Stopped for lunch at the Natural Bridge park near Field &#8211; basically a waterfall that flows under a rock bridge &#8211; nothing spectacular but a popular curiosity.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of road construction between Golden and Banff &#8211; I&#8217;m pleased that they seem to be working of fixing that scary dangerous section just east of Golden.\u00a0 My dash-cam caught some young bighorn sheep beside the road on that section &#8211; a common sight there.\u00a0 view full size and look by the telephone pole:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9628.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/IMG_9628_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_9628\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Also stopped at the Spiral Tunnels to do some rephotography.\u00a0Here are two old pictures of me there.\u00a0 The left is, I think, from when I was 12 (I was a much better dresser back then, I&#8217;m sure you&#8217;ll agree). The right was from my early 20s I think.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/spiral_tunnels_rephoto_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/spiral_tunnels_rephoto_1_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"spiral_tunnels_rephoto_1\" width=\"640\" height=\"298\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was nobody with me this time to properly repro the photo, so instead I did the other kind of rephotography: picture-in-picture:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/d20110810_0385.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/08\/d20110810_0385_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110810_0385\" width=\"640\" height=\"426\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>For those who don&#8217;t know, Spiral Tunnels is just that &#8211; a pair of spiral train tunnels that help trains negotiate a difficult pass. \u00a0There is a viewing area where you can often see the same train going in and coming out of a tunnel at once, crossing over itself in the process. \u00a0The novelty wore off after the first visit though.<\/p>\n<p>Lots of construction delays up to Banff, and heavy rains in that area too, but after that an uneventful drive into Calgary.<\/p>\n<p>I took about 400 pictures today but haven&#8217;t had time to go through them.\u00a0 Will perhaps post some another time.<\/p>\n<p>[gmap file=&#8221;__UPLOAD__\/2011\/08\/20110810.kml&#8221; visible=&#8221;true&#8221; width=&#8221;80%&#8221; zoom=&#8221;auto&#8221; center=&#8221;files&#8221; type=&#8221;satellite&#8221;] <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Road trip log for 2011\/08\/10.
