{"id":2556,"date":"2013-07-17T21:08:41","date_gmt":"2013-07-18T04:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=2556"},"modified":"2013-07-17T21:09:01","modified_gmt":"2013-07-18T04:09:01","slug":"zombie-disease-is-almost-real","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=2556","title":{"rendered":"Zombie disease is (almost) real"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It just occurred to me that classic film zombie behavior is actually what humans would do if rabies affected us the way it affects other animals.<\/p>\n<p>In humans, untreated rabies just causes a nasty and painful death. \u00a0In susceptible animals, it lowers fear and raises aggression, causing the animal to see any other animal as a mortal enemy to be killed at all cost &#8211; thus spreading the disease further.<\/p>\n<p>Why didn&#8217;t I realize this sooner? \u00a0The modern virus-like version of zombism is not that far-fetched at all, and could easily be imagined as a mutated rabies virus. \u00a0I wonder if part of the popularity of zombie stories comes from the unconscious realization that this is a real-world behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, wild outbreaks of super-rabies are still a stretch of the imagination, as we&#8217;re pretty good at controlling the spread of even incurable diseases these days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It just occurred to me that classic film zombie behavior is actually what humans would do if rabies affected us the way it affects other animals.
