{"id":1757,"date":"2011-09-17T19:22:22","date_gmt":"2011-09-18T02:22:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nerdhive.org\/glob\/?p=1757"},"modified":"2012-05-26T19:47:45","modified_gmt":"2012-05-27T02:47:45","slug":"ottawa-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=1757","title":{"rendered":"Ottawa day 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2011\/09\/17<\/p>\n<p>Today was all about hitting the local museums.\u00a0 I got a multi-museum passport that covers something like 11 of them.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencetech.technomuses.ca\/english\/index.cfm\">Canadian Museum of Science &amp; Technology<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This was actually very much like the Ontario Science Center, though a bit smaller and with fewer interactive exhibits.<\/p>\n<p>They had some steam locomotives that you could go inside the cabins of, which was cool.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0013.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0013_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0013\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There was an exhibit on Canadian-made automotives.\u00a0 This one was steam-powered, manufactured by a jeweler and had no brakes:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0069.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0069_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0069\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And I&#8217;m sure you all recognize this lovely little thing:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0074.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0074_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0074\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A mock-up of the cargo bay control area of the Space Shuttle (yes, with a Canadarm and no, you couldn&#8217;t move it):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0091.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0091_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0091\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mockup of a Tokamak fusion generator. Sadly nonfunctional, but it had pulsating purple lights inside, and that&#8217;s always impressive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0145.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0145_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0145\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Quite a few other interesting exhibits, but like most educational museum-type stuff, not terribly photogenic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviation.technomuses.ca\/\">Canadian Aviation and Space Museum<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sadly I wasn&#8217;t able to get one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aviation.technomuses.ca\/visit_us\/at_the_museum\/biplane_rides\/\">biplane rides<\/a> today, but for reference they do allow cameras on the flights. Museum (mostly interactive stuff for kids).<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a decent museum, but&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I liked the postal museum especially,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0492.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0492_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0492\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>but the large section on aboriginal history didn&#8217;t interest me much,<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0500.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0500_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0500\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0513.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0513_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0513\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(although this looks <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gagme.com\/greg\/vacation\/2004\/whistler\/slideshow.php?sect=stanleypark&amp;fn=aquarium01.jpg\">awfully familiar<\/a>):<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0520.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110917_0520_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110917_0520\" width=\"320\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>and the well done Canadian history section was for me a repeat of the more authentic stuff I&#8217;ve seen at regional museums and places like Upper Canada Village, so I didn&#8217;t take a whole lot of pictures.<\/p>\n<p>They did have an interesting temporary exhibit on Japan, but photos weren&#8217;t allowed in that section.\u00a0 That&#8217;s pretty typical of museums, I&#8217;ve found &#8211;
