{"id":1661,"date":"2011-09-13T18:32:29","date_gmt":"2011-09-14T01:32:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nerdhive.org\/glob\/?p=1661"},"modified":"2012-05-26T19:40:00","modified_gmt":"2012-05-27T02:40:00","slug":"the-right-coast-and-homeward-bound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/?p=1661","title":{"rendered":"The Right Coast and Homeward Bound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>2011\/09\/13<\/p>\n<p>Today I woke up to find Halifax shrouded in fog:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0006.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0006_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0006\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>My plan was to catch the 1pm ferry to Prince Edward Island, so I hit the road as soon as I could. Modulo a delay searching for a gas station, and picking up something to eat later on.\u00a0 I ended up being lucky; I arrived at the ferry terminal just as the boat was docking, but still managed to get aboard.<\/p>\n<p>The ferries here are smaller than the ones in BC, but still have a pretty decent vehicle capacity.<\/p>\n<p>I saw my first wild whale.\u00a0 It was most of a mile away &#8211; this is an unscaled crop from a telephoto shot.\u00a0 I leave identifying the species to you.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0076.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0076_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0076\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On arrival on the island, I had my lunch then drove through Charlottetown to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gov.pe.ca\/where.php3?city=Brackley+Beach\">Brackley Beach<\/a>, which serves as the east coast analogue of Long Beach for this journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0119.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0119_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0119\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0124.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0124_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0124\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>It is a pretty nice beach, with large sand dunes, soft sand and a good breeze.\u00a0 I took my shoes off and walked on the sand, and dipped my toes in the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0130.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0130_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0130\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And with that (cue music) the eastbound leg of my journey comes to an end.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/mission_1_complete.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/mission_1_complete_thumb.png\" alt=\"mission_1_complete\" width=\"640\" height=\"471\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As for my timelapse movie project, so far I&#8217;ve recorded 180,000 frames and the camera is still holding out.<\/p>\n<h2>Westbound<\/h2>\n<p>Time to turn around and head home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/mission_2_start.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/mission_2_start_thumb.png\" alt=\"mission_2_start\" width=\"640\" height=\"472\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m actually excited to be heading back.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a very similar feeling to when I started my trip, only instead of the flavor of visiting old haunts with an aftertaste of new discovery, this time it&#8217;s the other order with a final sweetness of homecoming.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll be going faster on the return trip, but I do have a couple of short layovers planned.\u00a0 Ottawa is the first.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, after leaving the beach, I took a short detour up the coast to Cavendish, home of Lucy Maud Montgomery of &#8220;Anne of Green Gables&#8221; fame.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve never read the books and I barely remember the TV series, but my mother is a fan so I thought I&#8217;d get her a souvenir.\u00a0 I got there just as they were closing, so I got in for free and got a bunch of photos of the place.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0147.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0147_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0147\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I thought this Green Gables house was a recreation of a fictional house from the book series, but talking to the tour guide, this turns out not to be the case.\u00a0 This is the real house that inspired the books; LMM lived a short ways from here but hung out in this house a lot.\u00a0 They&#8217;ve redecorated the interior slightly to make it match some details from the books, but otherwise it&#8217;s original.<\/p>\n<p>Then drove back to Moncton for the night, passing over the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.confederationbridge.com\/en\/\">Confederation Bridge<\/a> on the way.\u00a0 It&#8217;s pretty nice.\u00a0 Only two lanes, but it is <strong>eight miles<\/strong> long.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like driving over the ocean, because that&#8217;s what it is.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0190.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0190_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0190\" width=\"640\" height=\"264\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0193.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"margin: 0px;padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0193_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0193\" width=\"640\" height=\"406\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0200.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"padding-left: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-top: 0px;border: 0px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.soleillapierre.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/09\/d20110913_0200_thumb.jpg\" alt=\"d20110913_0200\" width=\"640\" height=\"353\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We really should get one of these for Vancouver Island.\u00a0 Problem with this one is the $45 toll, which is subsidizing the ferry service down the coast &#8211; my boat ride was free; they get you on the way back, whichever way you go.<\/p>\n<p>Today was a bit of a long day, but amazingly everything went according to my ridiculously ambitious plan.<\/p>\n<p>[gmap file=&#8221;__UPLOAD__\/2011\/09\/20110913.kml&#8221;
